Vietnam War reenactment pays tribute to veterans

The imitation gunshots startled onlookers who watched soldiers in combat uniforms run past in the woods of Camp Big Timber during a recreation of a 1968 Vietnam War battle in the A Shau Valley.

Viet Cong, an arm of the National Liberation Front of Vietnam, used the valley to funnel supplies into South Vietnam along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, said Rick Pennington, who along with Alex Nelson organized the “Return to the A Shau: A Tribute to Vietnam Veterans” at the former Boy Scouts Camp Big Timber on Big Timber Road Saturday and Sunday.

“It was one of the hottest pieces of real estate for eight to nine years,” said Pennington, a social studies teacher who has been involved in reenactments for 16 years.
