Growing up, my parents and my grandparents informed me that if I wanted to eat, I best learn how to work. I clearly remember when my grandfather, who grew up through the Depression, sat me down while I was finishing my final year of college and instructed me to learn a trade. His belief was the more one specialized, the more valuable one became – and if all else failed there was always a need for toilet scrubbers and manual labor – which I have done at times too.

Specialization changes with the times as we have all witnessed. Certainly having experience in a specific trade or industry helps in today’s job market. But if you are transitioning out of the service or have been out for some time, being well-equipped to deal with people – or in other terms, having people skills – is a sure way to stand above the crowd.
