Voters in Macomb County will get the chance to decide if they want to fund services for the county’s veterans at a higher rate after county commissioners today approved putting a countywide veterans millage proposal on the August ballot.

The board voted unanimously to put the 0.069-mill measure on the Aug. 2 ballot. It is a renewal and increase of the current millage, which is 0.04 mills.

The current millage does not expire until 2018, but the countyā€™s veterans affairs commission and veterans affairs director recommended a 0.029 millage hike to a revised millage total of 0.069 mills.

If approved by voters, the millage would raise about $1.75 million in the first year of the levy in 2017.Ā For a property with a market value of $100,000, the 0.069 mills would costĀ $3.45Ā annually.

Commissioners spent time today and Tuesday discussing the proposal, including the millage amount and what ballot ā€“Ā August or November ā€“Ā to put it on.hire vets

In a letter to commissioners last month, veterans services officials saidĀ census data suggests there are more than 55,391 veterans in the county, many suffering from physical and/or mental disabilities from their exposure to combat and noncombat related trauma.
