Saturday, veterans gathered to raise awareness on post-traumatic stress and suicide prevention.
They are called the Irreverent Warriors and their mission is to use humor and camaraderie to unite veterans and heal the mental wounds of war.
âIt tells people that hey, weâre here to help get you through whatever youâre going through,â said veteran Jeremiah Heidner, âand weâre only a phone call away or a message away. Weâre always there for you.â
Participants hike 22 kilometers with backpacks that weigh 22 kilograms to represent the 22 vets a day who commit suicide.
âIâm walking because it brings camaraderie to all the veterans that have gotten out and it just brings us back together,â said Heidner.
This is the second hike to take place in Acadiana and one of many that are held throughout the country.
