Saturday, veterans gathered to raise awareness on post-traumatic stress and suicide prevention.

They are called the Irreverent Warriors and their mission is to use humor and camaraderie to unite veterans and heal the mental wounds of war.

“It tells people that hey, we’re here to help get you through whatever you’re going through,” said veteran Jeremiah Heidner, “and we’re only a phone call away or a message away. We’re always there for you.”

Participants hike 22 kilometers with backpacks that weigh 22 kilograms to represent the 22 vets a day who commit suicide.hire vets

“I’m walking because it brings camaraderie to all the veterans that have gotten out and it just brings us back together,” said Heidner.

This is the second hike to take place in Acadiana and one of many that are held throughout the country.
