Art Miller, a Vietnam-era veteran of the Army and a former chaplain’s assistant at one of the country’s largest military hospitals, knows the look well: the empty stare, the fidgeting, the signs that a veteran’s invisible wounds, those inside his head, hurt the worst.

But it is just as likely that the veteran sitting at the coffee shop laughing with her friends or the one leading a chorus of “Happy Birthday” at his child’s party also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder or a traumatic brain injury. And they might not even know it yet.

So now that the modern-era wars are winding down and record numbers of veterans are leaving the military, Miller said, it is increasingly important to expand the safety net for them, or, better yet, establish programs to keep them from falling in the first place.hire vets

That’s why ViaQuest, the Dublin-based behavioral and health-care services provider where Miller is director of veterans services, is expanding its menu of veterans programs.
