Warren, Minn., nonprofit recognized for helping veterans adjust to civilian life

Lyle Palm received a national welding award for his work at Workshops for Warriors, a San Diego-based nonprofit that assists veterans gain new skills and employment as they make the transition into civilian life. He is dean of the welding school at Workshop for Warriors and teaches part-time there with his brother, Tim.

“It’s exciting,” said Lyle Palm. “All the time and effort that we’ve put into the program to get it up and running to train veterans is being recognized, which is really gratifying.”

But their work extends beyond teaching — they encourage students to fight for the medical benefits they need, counsel them during the transition process and help them avoid pitfalls, said Tim Palm.  “It’s not just a school,” he said.

He said the award recognition will also help Workshop for Warrior’s campaign to build a hire vetslarger facility, which could accommodate 450 students per year instead of its current rate of 100. Since 2011, the nonprofit has graduated 171 veterans, according to its website.
