New organization makes career connections for veterans

Bobby Brown has a certificate as an electrical technician and the will to find a career that he can be proud of.

For now, though, he’s been surviving on odd jobs and temp work, stocking local warehouses and washing dishes at a restaurant on the Carnegie Mellon University campus.

This isn’t the life he envisioned for himself when he left the Army in 1986 after tours of duty in Germany and Hawaii.

It’s not what leaders of a new local nonprofit want for area veterans, either.

“These are people who have served their country. We want to give them a career and growth opportunities hire vetswithin that career,” said Jack Wagner, former state auditor general and executive director of Pittsburgh Hires Veterans, a consortium of organizations with one goal: to help local vets find careers.

The initial focus will be on manufacturing jobs, said Mr. Wagner, who is a veteran.
