Gov.-Shumlin

By Keith Whitcomb Jr.

Gov. Peter Shumlin expressed support for keeping the Vermont Veterans’ Home strong when he visited the area on Monday.

The home, which employs some 200 people and cares for roughly 130 veterans and veteran spouses, relies on a subsidy from the state General Fund. Recently the House of Representatives passes a bill giving home $5.4 million, but that also created a working group tasked with eliminating the need for that money by 2018, a goal some view with great skepticism.

Shumlin told those gathered at the Bennington Welcome Center that the state faces a large budget gap and that difficult choices will be made in order to close it.

“At the same time we need to make choices within those choices, like making sure the Veterans’ Home remains hire vetsstrong,” he said. “I’m very grateful to the House for sticking with my recommendation to the Veterans’ Home. We should give a hand to Joe Krawczyk and the job he’s doing at the Veterans’ Home.”
