Obama picks Morristown Medical Center president to fix scandal-scarred Veterans Affairs

The president of Morristown Medical Center has been tapped to help clean up the scandal-ridden U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

President Obama today nominated Dr. David J. Shulkin as undersecretary for health in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He will fill a position that has been vacant since May, when Robert Petzel resigned before his scheduled retirement date following reports that extra-long wait times at Phoenix VA hospitals were covered up while veterans were dying waiting for appointments. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki also resigned in the scandal.

House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) said in 2014 as many as 40 people died in Phoenixhire vets while the health care facilities kept two sets of books to hide the long waits veterans had to endure.
