Long Beach veterans voice concerns at VA town hall meeting

Lakewood resident and U.S. Navy veteran Daniel Behan said this week he has to fight for his medication every month.

The frustration was palpable as Behan spoke directly to Veterans Affairs officials at the Long Beach Healthcare System campus Tuesday night during a town hall meeting, the third such event organized in the wake of revelations last year that many veterans were receiving delayed and substandard care across the nation. The scandal ultimately resulted in VA Secretary Eric Shinseki tendering his resignation.

Behan was critical of a system that over-emphasizes facility infrastructure and devices.

ā€œWe need people, doctors, nurses ā€” not machines,ā€ he said.

Since the controversy last year, new Secretary Robert A. McDonald issuedan order for all VA hire vetshealthcare and benefits facilities to hold town hall forums by the end of September.
