Veteran Sean Hillebrant didn’t know anyone when he came to Asheville six months ago. He just knew he needed help.

Homeless, Hillebrant, 45, was sleeping in vacant barns and abandoned cars in upstate New York.

He had just started receiving substance abuse counseling when someone told him about Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry’s Veteran’s Restoration Quarters.

“I was going nowhere in New York. I figured why not give it a shot,” he said.

Within six months of coming to Asheville, Hillebrant was employed. “The VRQ pretty much helped save my life,” he said. “This place is giving me an opportunity to totally create my life over again.”

On Wednesday, area officials were at the Veteran’s Restoration Quarters and other area shelters and missions to identify chronically homeless individuals.

Called the Point-In-Time Count, the national census is conducted over a 24-hour period each year to gather snapshothire vets information about people experiencing homelessness on one given night.
