Health Matters summit takes up veterans’ health issues

The moderator of the first Veterans Health and Wellness Town Hall held in conjunction with the Clinton Foundation’s Health Matters Activation Summit wasted no time in getting right down to business in his opening remarks Monday night in the Crystal Ballroom at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa.

“There is a long-term health crisis that’s facing veterans of the United States military,” Dave Zinczenko, ABC News Nutrition & Wellness editor, said in his first words to the crowd. “There are close to 2.5 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), they are more susceptible to long-term health illnesses that are due to poor diet and physical activity than the rest of us.”

The Clinton Health Matters Initiative, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, teamed with Spike TV, a division of Viacom, to host the event – organized through Spike’s Veterans Operation Wellness campaign. The evening featured two panel discussions comprised primarily of military veterans, business leaders and representatives of non-profit organizations.

Veterans shared stories of their struggles re-entering the civilian population after their military careers had ended. hire vetsWithout the camaraderie, the physical and mental challenges of training and the inherent discipline required in their day-to-day military lives, they floundered.
