* The Pentagon plans to furlough nearly 800,000 civilian workers one day a week starting April if sequestration kicks in March 1.
Under the scenario, the unpaid days off would run through the end of the fiscal year in September.

* Marine Gen. John Allen is retiring. The former commander in Afghanistan is leaving uniform instead of taking the top NATO job in Europe.
Last month, Allen was cleared of inappropriate conduct involving a Tampa socialite. Allen said medical issues in his family prompted the decision.

* Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal said the draft should be reinstated. If for no other reason than to break down the cultural and economic divide between those who serve and those who don’t.

* Unemployment among veterans 18 to 24 topped 20 percent last year and was in the double digits for those 25-34. Both numbers are higher than among nonveterans.
This, despite broad government and private efforts to find them work.
