* A legendary piece of American military history is going up for sale.

The original bronze statue of the raising of the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima is expected to bring nearly $2 million at an auction in New York later this month.

* The United Nations is blaming the US for the deaths of hundreds of children in Afghanistan due to alleged indiscriminate use of force.

American military officials called the conclusions “categorically unfounded.”

* Some 34,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan will reportedly be home by February 2014. The announcement is expected to be part of President Obama’s State of the Union address.

* A Department of Veterans Affairs review of its national cemeteries found 15 sets of remains buried in the wrong graves and nearly 800 other problems.


* The U.S. military plans to position reaction teams around the globe to respond to attacks like the one that killed four Americans last September in Libya.

Commando teams were sent to help, but didn’t arrive until 15 hours after the first of two attacks on the American consulate in Benghazi.
