* U.S. embassies might soon be getting security make-overs thanks to $1.1 billion approved by the Senate this week. 

The money comes to counter terrorist attacks like the one in Libya last year that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others.

The bill now goes to the House.

* In a move sure to have lasting implications, the Defense Department is expected to announce that benefits will be extended to same-sex military spouses.

* The Veterans Affairs Department is launching a study to determine the medical consequences of serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The study will look at environmental health effects including those of open-air burn-pits.


* The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are planning studies of their own: These to determine if women can physically hack it in combat roles.

The military branches are all reexamining the physical demands of fields previously closed to women.

* Three civilian workers at Camp Pendleton Marine base in Southern California are charged with stealing $3 million of military medical equipment. If convicted they face up to 10 years in prison.
