* The Defense Department might be violating U.S. sanctions by unwittingly buying oil from Iran.

 

The special inspector general for Afghanistan says the Pentagon has no idea where the oil it buys for Afghan military forces comes from.

 

The United States has spent more $1 billion on the program since 2007.


 

* The bulk of U.S. forces is pulling out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014, but tens of thousands of Afghans are leaving the country now.

 

Last year, at least 50,000 Afghans fled to Europe and Australia. That’s more than twice as many as the year before.

 

Afghan officials are warning against illegal migration, but the exodus continues.

 

* America faces becoming a second-rate military power if a budget deal doesn’t keep an extra $500 billion in defense cuts from happening, said Defense Sec. Leon Panetta.

 

The military is all ready facing a $500 billion budget cuts in the next decade.

 

Congress has until March 1 to reach a deal and avert the additional cuts.
