Military suicide: one death is too many

* Nearly one veteran every hour commits suicide, according to a new VA study. The rate of 22 a day is about 20 percent higher than past estimates.

More than two-thirds of these veterans are 50 or older.

* Defense spending dropped sharply in the last quarter of 2012 as military budget reductions get ready to kick in March 1.

The 22 percent drop is the largest since 1972 and the waning years of the Vietnam War.

Nearly half a trillion dollars in military cuts are planned in the next decade.

* The number of jobless veterans hit nearly 850,000 in January, almost 150,000 more than four months earlier.

The official unemployment rate for veterans is 7.6. But government insiders say the real rate is much higher than that, possibly 30 percent for the youngest vets.

* The Pentagon only wants the best and the brightest – and that apparently goes for dogs as well.

Plans are underway to give pooches brain scans in order to find the smartest ones to make service dogs.
